I retract my comment from earlier about the similar models not making sense. I see the similarities to the Railway Series now. One bit that was dummed down in the TV show (at least in the USA release) was the fact that Steam was being replaced by Diesel engines, and many, MANY engines were getting scrapped, including all of Gordon's Doncaster brethren, except for the Flying Scottsman.

The Billington E2s were all scrapped by 1963, so in the railway series, Thomas would the last of his class. However, I have heard that a new E2, numbered 110, is about to be built and operate on heritage railways, so Thomas will not be the last of the E2s for long. This engine will have an extended coal bunker, and whether it will have wheel splashers or not, I cannot say. But, I am sure the new E2 will pose as Thomas the Tank Engine now and again.

Actually, the 1st E2 Class locomotive to be built was Billington, an E2 Class locomotive that I created, he used to be number 100 on the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR), but when he was bought by his new driver, he was repainted white with black stripes and the LBSC on his tanks were removed and was replaced by the number 1.
